Lena Headey continues to prove herself the go to actress for terrifying female baddie roles too, while Olivia Thirlby injects convincing life into the potentially thankless role of the relatively innocent rookie. Karl Urban plays the permanently helmeted Dredd with a satisfyingly uncompromising grimness, ensuring that not so much as a hint of a smile ever plays around his lips. Which is, of course, exactly how his fans want it to be. Heads explode from gunfire, skin is removed with gay abandon, people literally splat to earth after being dropped from great heights, eyes are ripped from their sockets, genitals are merrily munched off - there really is no act of violence Dredd shies away from. Most of Dredd takes place in a single locked-down tower block, and the plot is really no more complicated than Dredd and his innocent new sidekick having to survive a constant barrage of increasingly violent attempts to kill them using survival techniques seldom more sophisticated than just being even more violent than their attackers.
